Weston bring winless run to an end by seeing off Dover

Monday, November 16, 2009, 07:00

Weston-super-Mare 3 Dover Athletic 1: Weston defied terrible weather conditions to register their first win in four league attempts against second-in-the-table Dover.

Dover keeper Lee Hook did well to keep out a strong effort from Jack Compton, who will spend this week on trial with Scottish Premier League side Falkirk.

At the other end, Frannie Collin fired narrowly wide, Shaun Welford hit the woodwork and Nicky Southall forced a flying save from home keeper Kevin Sawyer. But Weston's pressure paid off on 20 minutes when Dave Gilroy and Ben Cleverley combined to set up Compton to fire across Hook into the far corner.

Later, Joyce had an effort beaten out by Hook, and Compton was just over with a free-kick.

Gilroy put Weston further in front on 52 minutes when he beat the offside trap from Craig Rand's clearance, and he added another on 66 minutes from Cleverley's cross-field pass, for his seventh goal in six league appearances.

Welford pulled a goal back for Dover after a scramble in the 69th minute.
