Cousins out to get another Cup scalp

Friday, October 09, 2009, 07:00

Rob Cousins has enjoyed some memorable days in the FA Cup and victory for Paulton Rovers over Newport County in the third qualifying round at Winterfield Road tomorrow would be a welcome addition to his CV.

The scalp of the Blue Square South leaders, unbeaten this season, might not compare to the drama of beating Hereford United live on Sky Sports, or holding Joe Jordan's Stoke City to a draw when he was at Bath City but a Rovers win would arguably be the result of the weekend.

"It is great for a small club to have a decent run in the FA Cup," said Cousins. "You get publicity and a chance to be in the spotlight, not just for the players but the club as a whole.

"And also, for smaller clubs, it is a great way to boost revenue. Obviously Newport is going to be very tough as they are unbeaten this season.

"But if our players rise to the occasion and don't freeze then we can give them a game."

The experience of 981 games, which started with one appearance for Bristol City before being released by Jordan and took in spells at Bath City, Yeovil Town, Forest Green Rovers, Tiverton Town and Mangotsfield United, means 38-year-old Cousins will be an invaluable presence in manager Andrew Jones' squad.

"Rob has been brilliant for me and the club and I value his advice very highly," said Jones. "He doesn't start every game now but he helps out with coaching and is a great presence in the dressing room."

With Chris Lane recovered from flu and Ben Lacey hopeful of being fit, Jones could have the luxury of a fully-fit squad.

Mangotsfield United face a no less daunting task as they travel to take on Truro City.

Until this season, Truro have been all-conquering in their rise through the non-league scene, but they have suffered recent defeats at home to Farnborough and Chippenham Town, so Bater knows they are not invincible.

Mike Trought, Geraint Bater and Mitchell Page are all expected to be fit after missing Tuesday's defeat against Slough, but Kyle Tooze is unavailable. Scott Hendy will be out for another four weeks with a broken hand.
