Swindon Town striker Simon Cox has promised to fight tooth and nail to ease the pressure on under-fire manager Maurice Malpas, writes James McNamara.

Angry fans remonstrated with Malpas at the final whistle on Saturday after Huddersfield were the latest side to take advantage of Swindon's horror run of home form.

The 3-1 defeat was Town's fifth consecutive reverse at the County Ground, but Malpas has refused to be forced into a resignation by his critics and has vowed to battle on and turn the corner.

And Cox, who spurned a chance to level the game by missing a penalty just seconds before Huddersfield doubled the lead, insists the players are all behind the manager.

He said: I can't comment on the fans because they pay their money to come and watch us, and if we don't perform they are entitled to voice their opinion.

"We can't stop them from doing that and we can only affect the things that we can control. We step over the white line every week and then it is down to us to win games.

"We are always behind the manager, because if you are not there is no point in playing football.

"You don't have to like the manager, but you have to respect his views on the way he wants to play football. Every one of us will fight for him and there is still a great atmosphere among the boys here – we just have to start taking that in to games now."

Town have failed to win at the County Ground since the opening day of the season and have slipped perilously close to the bottom four with just nine points from their 10 league games.

"I can't put my finger on why we can't win at home and neither can any of the other boys,"Cox added.

"It is one of those things that we can't let get on top of us.

"The table might be starting to take shape but all we need is two wins and then you start thinking about the top six again. We just need to get a win to lift spirits here because we are now fighting a battle we didn't want to be in."
