1927: Teddy Wakelam of BBC Radio gave the first live rugby commentary on the first international match from Twickenham. England beat Wales 11-9.

1963: A crowd of 62,000 at the Memorial Coliseum, Los Angeles, witnessed the Green Bay Packers beat the Kansas City Chiefs 35-10 to win the first Super Bowl.

1984: Legendary Ukrainian pole-vaulter Sergei Bubka set his first world record with a vault of 5.81 metres.
