Re-live history at medieval fair
A medieval-themed fair will be held at one of the region's most historic buildings.
The ancient tythe barn in Winterbourne was commissioned in 1342 by its lord of the manor, Thomas de Bradeston.
The fair will include a re-enactment by The Company of Chivalry of him gathering troops in the village in preparation for his campaign to fight the French at the Battle of Crecy in 1346.
Troops will be seen gambling, marching, training and in combat at the event, which will also feature a parade by the colours and a knight from the household of nearby Berkeley Castle.
A series of living history displays, demonstrations and talks have been planned on medieval medicine, coin making, whittling, sewing and making cloth.
Displays of armour will also be set up at the event, which has been organised by the Winterbourne Medieval Barn Trust as a fundraiser to pay for more restoration of the barn.
The storehouse is listed by English Heritage as being of outstanding historical interest.
But until it was bought by South Gloucestershire Council in 1998, it had been in danger of collapse as a result of neglect.
A programme of restoration began in 2002, jointly financed by the council and English Heritage.
The trust is now working with the council to revitalise the whole complex and make it a community-led project based on heritage, food and farming education.
The fair takes place from 2pm to 9pm on Saturday, June 27, with an entry fee of £2 for adults and £1 for children.
