Finally a trumpeting of local talent well overdue

Monday, June 15, 2009, 07:00

A t last! Bristol Museum and Art Gallery is putting on a big show by one of our own artists.

Perhaps this will now springboard further loyalties to be promoted on a similar scale: George Melhuish, George Sweet, Rosemary Bigwood, Francis Hewlett, Robert Organ, Sue Caines, John E Jones, Janet Arnold, Neil Murison, Margaret Lovell – and a score of others with whom I'm still in touch should the appropriate management be interested.

Bristol's painting school at the West of England College of Art between 1947 and 1960 was quite the best in the country.

Bristol Museum and Art Gallery could follow up with that.

The municipality would have been doing well to reflect our talent all these years instead of leaving it to the R.W.A and preferring out-of-towners.

Quentin Williams.

Have your say

Manchester is getting a congestion charge, and Bristol could also have one by 2014? Do you think it will work in Bristol?
