Mathison is Lawrence Rovers' treble hero

Thursday, November 19, 2009, 07:00

Luke Mathison was the key man as he scored a hat-trick to help Lawrence Rovers to a 3-1 Bristol Premier Combination Division I win over Brimsham Green.

His first goal came from a corner. Daniel Harris flicked the ball on and Mathison headed it into the far corner.

And his second strike also came from a corner. The ball was whipped in to Mathison, who controlled the ball, kept his cool, and placed it into the top corner.

The hat- rick came after a good move by Rovers. The ball fell to Mathison just inside the area, he brought the ball on to his left foot and hit a powerful shot into the top left corner.

It was an impressive performance from Mathison, who is powerful in the air with decent pace, and he gave the opposition defence a torrid afternoon.

Lawrence Rovers manager Bernie Harrington said: "He's played for us for a fair few years and has always been our top goalscorer.

"He didn't play much last year through injury, but he's back scoring this year. We call him the 'Hitman' as he always scores."

Mathison, who dedicated his award to Kai Holmes after he helped him recover from injury, added: "Everything seemed to fall for me today. I was in the right positions. It was all down to the team performance."

Undoubtedly, Mathison will play a pivotal role in Rovers' season this year – If he can stay fit there are plenty of goals in him.
