Still laughing after 65 years of married life
A couple who met in London after being introduced by a mutual friend are celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary.
George and Mary Weaden, who now live in Easton-in-Gordano, met in the capital in 1942 when George was serving in the army and Mary was working at a printing firm.
After courting for six months, George asked Mary to marry him on their way home from a day out.
Mary, 86, said: "We had been out for the day and it was nearly midnight and we were on our way home when George asked me to marry him.
"We never had a honeymoon – in fact, I'm still waiting for it 65 years on."
The pair then moved to George's home village of Easton-in-Gordano where they married on September 2 at St George's Church, surrounded by family and friends.
Mary continued to work in the printing business before stopping work to have their three sons, Alan, John and Colin.
George, who is 90 at the end of the month, left the army in 1945 and then started work as a carpenter in the Bristol area.
The couple now have five grandchildren and five great grandchildren, with a sixth on the way.
The pair now spend their time gardening at their home at Hardwick Road and getting out and about as much as they can.
They are also members of the Friday club for senior citizens in Pill where they have many friends.
The couple celebrated their special anniversary at home with family and friends.
Mary puts the success of their marriage down to sharing a joke with each other.
Mary said: "We have been very lucky and very happy and I think our key to a good marriage is a bit of give and take.
"We have had our ups and downs, but have always ensured we have enjoyed a good laugh together."
