Sampson: We must get a result tonight

Thursday, November 12, 2009, 07:00

Bristol Academy tonight play the first of two home games which will be key to their top- flight survival hopes in the FA Premier League when Birmingham City visit Oaklands Park (7.45pm).

The hosts remain anchored to the bottom of the league table after a 2-0 weekend defeat at Doncaster Belles, but City arrive at Almondsbury only two places and seven points above them having played a game more.

"It's how we react tonight that's important," said Academy boss Mark Sampson, who saw goals from Emma Johnson and Vicky Exley consign his side to their weekend defeat at the Keepmoat Stadium.

He added: "It was an experience for the girls to play on Doncaster's first-team pitch in front of a good crowd. We were missing a few players and had 16-year-old Ellis Parsons making her debut at left-back – she did well. But we are hoping two or three might be back for the Birmingham match. It's one we have got to get a result from."

Tonight's clash is followed by Millwall's visit on Sunday.

Kayleigh Sage bagged all of Keynsham Town's goals as they returned to winning ways in the Southern Division with a 3-0 victory over Fulham at the Crown Field.

Winscombe's run in the FA Women's Cup was ended by a 3-2 defeat at Swindon Town.

In the Premier Division of the South West Women's League, Oldland Abbotonians went down 4-1 at title-chasing Gloucester City, Gemma Summers scoring for the visitors.

Downend Flyers moved further away from the bottom two in Eastern Division One with a 4-0 win at Winscombe Reserves. Katie Michael, Laura Baker and Sarah Dean gave the visitors a 3-0 interval lead, with Karina Cockell rounding things off after the break.

Nailsea United are still looking for their first league win of the campaign after going down 4-0 at high-flying Forest Green Reserves.

In the Gloucestershire County Women's League, AEK Boco took over the leadership of Division Two. Their 3-2 win at Cheltenham Spa CS saw them leapfrog rivals Bitton, who were without a game.
