Bristol Academy hoping to receive a walkover

WOMEN'S FOOTBALL: Bristol Academy are hoping to be awarded their FA Premier League Cup tie against Reading after the visitors called off their second round tie at Almondsbury just a few hours before kick-off.

Reading said they were unable to field a side because of sickness in their camp, but it left Academy boss Mark Sampson less than impressed.

"We were bitterly disappointed because we were expecting quite a big crowd," said Sampson. "Several people turned up anyway, expecting to see a game, and I'd like to apologise to them, but there's not a lot we can do if the opposition suddenly say they are not turning up."

The Academy are now confident the FA will hand them the game – and consequently an away tie at Chelsea in the next round.

They return to National Division action on Sunday with a home game against Watford, and are still looking for their first points of the season after last week's 4-0 defeat at Birmingham.

"Watford are flying at the moment and we seem to be playing teams who are in the middle of good runs," said Sampson.

"Some of our general play has been good, but we are not putting the ball in the net and need to be more ruthless in front of goal."

Keynsham Town's reward for their 3-1 win over Charlton in the League Cup is a trip to holders Arsenal in the next round on November 1.

It was the second time Barrie Newton's side have beaten the Addicks this season. They took a 2-0 lead through Kayleigh Sage and Ashley Reinecke and, although Grace Coombes pulled a goal back for Charlton, Tanja Andjelkovic headed Keynsham's third.

The Somerset club make the long trip to Colchester for a Southern Division game this weekend.

Oldland Abbotonians suffered their sixth defeat on the trot in the Premier Division of the SW Women's League as they went down 7-1 at Cheltenham Town, Gemma Summers scoring their consolation goal.

"We started well over the first 20 minutes, but conceded two goals from corners in a five-minute spell and then heads dropped," said assistant boss Steve Lavis.

Bristol Ladies Union fought back from behind to take the lead against newly-promoted Weymouth thanks to two Frankie Stone goals, but in the end they had to be content with a point from a 2-2 draw, despite a flurry of unconverted chances.

In Eastern Division One, Katie Michael scored Downend Flyers' goal as they went into the break with their game against Keynsham's Development side locked at 1-1. But Keynsham added five goals in the second half to run out comfortable winners.

Nailsea United went down 5-4 to Swindon Spitfires with Charlotte Savage scoring two to take her tally to eight in seven games. Holly Savage also netted, and Kate Lidington converted a penalty.

Yate Town's 2-1 victory over Cam Bulldogs saw them leapfrog their opponents and move into third place in Division One of the Gloucestershire County League. Zoe Youren scored both of their goals.

Emma Payne netted a deserved late winner for Bristol & West at Dursley, whose keeper had earlier made a string of good stops to thwart the visitors.

In Division Two, the top two clubs both enjoyed thumping 9-0 wins. Bitton romped to victory over Mitcheldean with Sharifa James – who scored five goals in her previous game – netting another six. Becky Jones, Grace Baker and Leanne Jones were also on target, and Bitton could even afford the luxury of missing a first-half penalty.

AEK Boco raced into an eight-goal lead at the break in their victory over Tetbury, with Jess Segesby (4), Leanne Burge (2), Louise Jacomb and Georgia Bush doing the damage. Bryony Harris completed the scoring in the second half.
