Grimsby Town 0 Bath City 2: Proud Bath City boss Adie Britton said he never had any doubts that his team could upset the odds and knock League Two Grimsby Town out of the FA Cup.

Goals from Chris Holland and Darren Edwards sealed a famous 2-0 victory at Blundell Park and sent City into the second round for the first time in five years.

The two-division difference between the clubs means this result will be classed as a shock, but City were by far the better team on the day and thoroughly deserved to beat the League Two strugglers.

"I don't think anyone can argue that we didn't deserve the result," said Britton. "We didn't steal it, we came and performed.

"No disrespect to Grimsby at all, but when this draw came out of the hat we knew we had a chance.

"Obviously they have been having a bad time of it and we have really been playing well.

"Going into the game we felt confident. The training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday were really good and there was a nice feeling amongst the squad when we got on the coach to come up on Friday.

"We had a chat after dinner the night before the game and I told the players I really believed we could go and win, and that if they believed it too they would win."

That belief was evident from the off as City quickly settled into the game, although it might have been a different story had Mariners striker Barry Conlon not put a free header over the bar early on.

Centre-half Holland showed him how it should be done in the 31st minute as he met Lewis Hogg's whipped free-kick with a trademark header to give City a deserved lead.

The visitors doubled their advantage seven minutes into the second half, when a snap-shot from Edwards took a slight deflection and looped over goalkeeper Nick Colgan for the striker's sixth goal in the FA Cup this season.

Grimsby tried to mount a late challenge but they were repelled by a tremendous defensive display and some outstanding work from Adam Connolly and Mark Badman.

"This is quite clearly my best moment in management," Britton added.

"I'd never been to the first round before as a manager or an assistant, let alone qualify for the second.

"We will enjoy it, we will savour it but we'll try to be professional as well and think about Staines in the league on Tuesday."
