Thornbury's second-half spree earns them an easy win

Monday, November 02, 2009, 07:00

Gloucestershire County League round-up:

Thornbury Town hit four second-half goals as they hammered Brimscombe & Thrupp 5-1 in the Gloucestershire County League.

Town were the better side for the first 30 minutes and forced visiting goalkeeper Adam Thomas into action on several occasions.

However, it was Brimscombe who took the lead on the half-hour mark with their first serious effort on goal.

Lee Pritchard sent in a low cross to the far post and Jamie Martin fired home from close range.

Just two minutes later, though, the home side were level as Steve Thompson's shot found the net despite Thomas getting something on the ball.

Thornbury started the second half very well as both Steve Alexander and James Derosa hit the woodwork before Thomas fouled Alexander in the box and Chris Parry converted the resulting spot-kick.

Derosa swept home a Parry cross to make it 3-1 and then two minutes later Alexander teed up Thompson for his second of the afternoon.

The scoring was completed when Derosa converted a Parry cross to notch his second of the afternoon.

The shock result of the day was Chipping Sodbury Town's 6-3 win at previously-unbeaten Rockleaze Avonside.

Danny Coombes opened the scoring for Town and Lee Gardiner made it 2-0 inside 20 minutes.

Avonside hit back through Troy Simpson before Gardiner made it 3-1 at half-time.

Luke Meacham made it 4-1 to Sodbury straight after the break and, although Simpson pulled another goal back, Alex Fox and Gardiner made it 6-2 to the visitors. Aaron Day scored a late third for Avonside.

Berkeley Town gained three valuable points with a 2-1 win over fellow strugglers Henbury.

Pete Holder and Rich Crowcombe gave Berkeley a 2-0 lead by the mid-point of the first half.

Eddie Howells pulled one back for Henbury in the second half, but they could not find an equaliser.

Taverners gained only their second point of the season after a 2-2 draw with Yate Town Reserves.

Justin Cattle and Omari Sims gave Yate a 2-0 lead in the first half, but Taverners' luck changed after the break.

A goalkeeping error allowed Richard Carey to pull a goal back and then Yate had a man sent off.

Mark Harsant then headed an equaliser before Yate lost a second player to indiscipline.

King's Stanley got out of jail as a last-minute goal from Matt Casey earned them a 1-1 draw at home to Bishop's Cleeve Reserves.

Mike Oliver had earlier given Cleeve the lead.

Kingswood took the lead in the first minute at Ellwood when Ed Dawkins put through his own goal, but Alan Williams saved a point for the hosts.

DRG Stapleton remain top of the table after fighting back to gain a 1-1 draw at home to Tuffley Rovers.

Rovers' Ben Wood gave his side an early lead but Martin Nicholls levelled for the Bristol side.

Kingswood

In the 18th century Kingswood was a small coal mining village where George Whitefield's open-air preaching greatly influenced John Wesley in the founding of Methodism. The construction of a number of chapels, Tabernacle and schools by Whitefield, Wesley, and their associates and followers is held to be one of the factors contributing to Kingswood's growth.
Coal mining first brought the Kingswood area to industrial prominence in the late 17th century.
The Douglas Motorcycle Company started making drain covers and lamp posts in but in 1907 the Kingswood company fitted a unique horizontal twin-cyclinder engine into a standard cycle frame.
The first model was primitive but by 1910 Douglas were racing and was the start of the company's 20-year domination of the sport. By 1923 Douglas motorcycles held 150 British and world records.
