Kingswood kick their way to success in Gloucester Two

Tuesday, November 03, 2009, 07:00

Kingswood survived a sin-binning, losing two players through injury and failure to win any significant quality set-piece possession to stretch their unbeaten record at the top of Gloucester Two.

They were 9-5 winners at BAC, with Ben Phillips making all three of his shots at goal count to make it six wins out of six for his side.

The scrum-half's accuracy proved to be the difference between the sides in a game of few clear-cut chances.

Phillips put his side in front with two penalties in three minutes midway through the first period before BAC pulled back an unconverted try eight minutes into the second half when winger Gary Chard chased a long kick ahead and dived on the ball.

But the home side, who dominated the scrums and threatened with their tight driving play, never really looked like scoring again despite Kingswood having stand-off Dean Stephens yellow-carded and losing flanker Nick Coe with an arm injury and centre Paul Allen with a broken jaw.

When Kingswood finally broke out of their own half, BAC gave away a penalty and Phillips converted from 25 metres to secure victory.

Bristol clubs are making all the early running in this division. Cotham Park remain second after securing a 22-6 win at Cheltenham Saracens, with skipper Craig Coulstring, Joe Laban (2) and Julian Hoefflin claiming tries and Pete Chilcott slotting one conversion.

St Brendan's, meanwhile, moved up to third after a 27-15 success at Tredworth. Centre James Douglas crossed twice, while fly-half Ben Chilvers also touched down and booted three conversions and two penalties.

Old Bristolians moved up to second in Gloucester One with their fifth win of the campaign, beating Dursley 32-21.

A commanding display from the pack gave the home side the upper hand. No 8 Liam De Glanville scored a brace of tries and hooker Jon Whiteman got one, while flanker Simon Hawkins kicked three conversions and two penalties.

Winger Steve Forster completed the try tally with an 80-metre kick and chase effort.

There was a first win of the season for Chipping Sodbury, who were 22-17 victors at Cryptians, but Aretians remain rooted to the bottom after going down 19-15 at home to Cheltenham Civil Service.

Saracens were knocked off the top of Gloucester Premier after suffering a first defeat of the season, 26-17 to Matson.

Kingswood

In the 18th century Kingswood was a small coal mining village where George Whitefield's open-air preaching greatly influenced John Wesley in the founding of Methodism. The construction of a number of chapels, Tabernacle and schools by Whitefield, Wesley, and their associates and followers is held to be one of the factors contributing to Kingswood's growth.
Coal mining first brought the Kingswood area to industrial prominence in the late 17th century.
The Douglas Motorcycle Company started making drain covers and lamp posts in but in 1907 the Kingswood company fitted a unique horizontal twin-cyclinder engine into a standard cycle frame.
The first model was primitive but by 1910 Douglas were racing and was the start of the company's 20-year domination of the sport. By 1923 Douglas motorcycles held 150 British and world records.
