Timeline: Death of Bristol schoolboy Sam Riddall and the hunt for killer

Tuesday, September 29, 2009, 10:15

Here is a timeline of events leading to the death of Bristol schoolboy Sam Riddall and the hunt for his hit-and-run killer:

Friday May 1 2009: Sam Riddall, 11, attends an evening youth service at Henleaze and Westbury Community Church, near Westbury-on-Trym.

9.15pm: Sam is walking home along Eastfield Road with Dr Peter Harbord, the father of one of his friends, and three other children when a white Ford Focus mounts the pavement and hits the group.

Witnesses see the female driver flee the scene towards Cote Lea Park. She is described as white, in her mid-30s, with long blonde hair.

Sam is taken to hospital but dies later in the evening. The three other children involved are uninjured while Dr Harbord suffers minor injuries.

Saturday May 2: Avon and Somerset Police make their first appeal for witnesses and urge the driver of the car to give herself up.

Detective Inspector Ian Chadwick said: "This was a nasty collision which claimed the life of a young boy and I am keen to establish exactly what happened yesterday evening."

May 2 (afternoon): A "confirmed sighting" of the owner of the vehicle, later revealed to be Hannah Saaf, 27, from Bristol, is made in central Bristol.

Sunday May 3: Sam's parents, Rachel and Martin Riddall, pay tribute to their "loveable and hugely popular" son and urge the driver to come forward. He leaves behind three brothers, aged five, nine and 14.

Tuesday May 5: Police take the rare step of naming and releasing a picture of the woman who owns the vehicle involved. She is identified as Hannah Saaf, from the Kingsdown area of Bristol.

Saaf, maiden name Hannah Jewell, is described as slim and around 5ft 9in.

Police say they are concerned for the welfare of Saaf, who is understood to be the mother of twins.

Wednesday May 6: Police issue a fresh appeal for witnesses in bid to find Saaf, who also has connections to Bristol, Taunton, Glastonbury, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire and London.

Thursday May 7: Mr Riddall, 45, and Mrs Riddall, 39, speak at a press conference at police headquarters in Bristol appealing for Saaf to give herself up so they can "put their lives back together".

They pay tribute to Sam's religious conviction, his popularity and his skill as a footballer.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Gary Stephens reveals the one confirmed sighting of Saaf in central Bristol among several other less credible reports.

Friday May 8: Police confirm the Riddalls' appeal sparked "a number" of sightings in and around Bristol.

Sunday May 10: Saaf is arrested on the outskirts of Pensford, near Bristol, after she is found sleeping under blankets in barn.

Monday May 11: A dishevelled Saaf appears at Bristol Magistrates' Court charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop and/or report an accident, driving otherwise than in accordance with her licence and driving without insurance.

Friday August 21: Saaf indicates a guilty plea to causing Sam's death by dangerous driving at Bristol Crown Court.

Tuesday September 29: Saaf pleads guilty to causing Sam's death by dangerous driving at Bristol Crown Court.
