THE express steam train the Torbay Express is a wonderful sight.

It is one of the most famous express steam trains of the post-war years and I am pleased to hear it will again, this year, be following the route of Brunel's Great Western Railway from Bristol Temple Meads, calling at Weston-super-Mare and Taunton, before speeding across Somerset and around the Devon coastline to Paignton and then on to Kingswear.

Steam engines can generate a smile in both the young and the old.

I have always enjoyed the delights of boarding a steam train and travelling back in time to when my parents took me aboard. You sink back into the seat and put on your rose-tinted spectacles without a thought of delayed trains.

The attraction of steam trains is the unique smell, the charm of yesteryear. I feel as life gets more and more hectic, the peaceful ride is magical. It is also good to know that the number of steam train travellers has been constantly increasing yearly.
