When insulating your loft can be too expensive
I OBJECT to the lecturing by the so-called green organisations on half-baked recommendations which are impractical for a very large part of the population ("Climate change – all must play their part", Open Lines, January 22).
For example: they witter on about insulation of houses implying that it is a simple, inexpensive option open to all.

A large proportion of our housing stock was built in the 1930s or before and almost none of this portion has cavity walls and much of it has accommodation in the roof space.
I challenge them to demonstrate a low-cost option or any method that does not either require a total internal refit with the loss of all internal period features and a significant loss of floor space, or an external re-cladding (frequently unacceptable to the planners), and in either case a probable bill of £50,000 or more.
