Last homes standing as Bristol prefab estate demolished
Demolition is being carried out to make way for new homes on a prefab site in Bristol.
Bristol City Council is preparing the Latimer Close in Broom Hill site for developer Bovis Homes to start construction of the replacement buildings.
Only two tenants remain in the single-storey homes on the site off Birchwood Road and they are due to be re-housed shortly.
Building work is expected to start next month, with 18 council properties being the first to go up on the site.
The first phase will include 14 bungalows, two two-bed houses and two four-bed houses.
Prefab tenants will be given first refusal for the Latimer Close homes and other similar schemes in the city.
They were all offered support and assistance to help them settle into their new homes.
A further 104 private properties will be put up on the site at a later date. The project was approved in January last year and work had initially been due to start last August.
Wring Demolition has moved onto the site to clear the way for the project, which is the latest in a series of building programmes to replace the council's ageing prefab housing stock.
About 50 prefabs had already been demolished on the site, and the estate boarded up and the paths blocked up.
Work is being carried out to complete the closing of roads and footpaths on the site ready for the redevelopment.
A spokeswoman for Bovis Homes said: "As part of the prefab redevelopment programme, Bristol City Council currently has its contractors demolishing many of the prefabs on the Latimer Close site in readiness to hand over the site to us for the start of our construction work.
"Our build programme will be run in two phases and we are anticipating a site start of late spring this year when we will begin work on the first phase of development.
"In total we will be building 118 homes, of which 18 will be for Bristol City Council.
"The remainder of the development will be for private sale and will offer a mix of two bedroom homes and apartments, coach houses and three bedroom homes."
