Noel Edmonds in Broadmead for new show

Wednesday, January 07, 2009, 16:29

TV personality and quiz show host Noel Edmonds has been appealing to people in Bristol to volunteer in the community.

The experiment was part of a new show called Noel's HQ: Do Us A Favour.

Noel, who films the hit Channel 4 quiz Deal Or No Deal in Bristol, was in Broadmead filming the new show, which is set to be broadcast every Saturday for five weeks from January 17 at 7.30pm on Sky 1.

It follows a series in September which saw Noel front a drive which resulted in more than 1,200 registering to become organ donors and another in which £25,000 worth of goods was donated to support Troop Aid.

The new five-part series was launched in Bristol yesterday to encourage people to pledge time to a local cause.

Noel and a camera crew spent the morning in Cabot Circus and Broadmead talking to passers-by and collecting contact details which will be passed on to organisations in need of volunteers. He said the response from Bristolians was "sensational".

He said: "We've had a fantastic response in Bristol. I was surprised because I thought that after Christmas people would be a bit cynical.

"But there was a real energy from people.

"We have had people interested in visiting the elderly, visiting people in prison, working with the young, or wanting to volunteer on an environmental project.

"Some said they could pledge one hour a month, some pledged one day a week.

"It's surprising how many people said they hadn't thought about volunteer work but would be interested in giving their time.

"The key message from Bristolians young, old and from all backgrounds, is that they want to help others. With people suffering the effects of the economic crisis it may be time to fall back on more traditional values.

"The idea following this trip to Bristol is to get a national momentum going."
