Henleaze to get second Christmas festival

Thursday, October 15, 2009, 07:00

Plans are underway for the second Henleaze Christmas Festival.

The first event, which was held last year, was so successful that organisers are planning to make this year's even better.

The festival centres on Henleaze Road, with stalls on the pavements and events taking place in the shops from Cavendish Road up to the Post Office.

But this year there will also be a stage for performances and improved lighting throughout the festival site.

The event is due to take place on Thursday December 10, from 3pm-8.30pm.

There will be road closures in Waterford Road, Dublin Crescent and Cardigan Road, and the stage will be in Cardigan Road.

Organisers Mike and Sue Drysdale, who own Cafe Kondi and Kondi Gifts on Henleaze Road, have worked with a team of local residents and shopkeepers to make the festival happen again this year.

Mr Drysdale, 58, said the improvements will make the festival one to remember but do come at a cost.

He said: "We have a great programme of entertainment planned; there will be music, arts and drama on display. There will also be smaller performances in the cafes and shops.

"Shops will be offering discounts and giving away freebies like mulled wine, hot cider and even paella; we are really looking forward to it.

"The costs are covered by the rental of the stalls and also the sale of the programme at £1 each, so it would be great if local people could support us by buying it when it comes out in November.

"They will be available in Henleaze shops and cafes and also door to door."

Henleaze Junior School's orchestra and choir will be starting the entertainment on the stage and other groups and choirs are coming from all over the city to perform.

Mr Drysdale said: "For me, the essence of it is that it is a community festival. It gathers everyone together and brings a great community spirit."
