Last season's runners up Thornbury bow out of Bristol & District Cup

Last year's losing finalists Thornbury have been knocked out of this summer's Bristol & District Cup.

Knowle have become the first side to reach the quarter-finals after winning their clash with the South Gloucestershire side by 39 runs last week.

Gloucestershire youngster Charlie Horwood hit 44 before Jack Weston smacked 45 in Knowle's 148-8.

Skipper Richard Trotman, opening the batting, replied with a half-century but Thornbury struggled against the Knowle attack with Davies Chisimba (3-28) and Habib Naqvi (4-26) the leading wicket-takers.

With holders Bedminster having already departed the competition this summer, there will be two different sides in this year's final.

Bristol are also through to the last eight after their third round match with Stapleton was called off when Stapleton were unable to raise a side.

A third Premier One side has also reached the quarter-finals after Downend saw off Bristol & North Somerset side Old Bristolians Westbury by 42 runs.

Jonathan Southgate (67) and Matthew Jackson (43) put on 87 for the first wicket before Downend made 165. Stuart MacArthur took 5-21. Bristolians' top order collapsed to 23-5 before the sixth-wicket pair of Ross Dallimore (34) and Kerry Lock (46) steadied the ship. but they finished on 123.

Brothers Phil Jackson (5-20) and Matthew Jackson (3-25) were the pick of the bowlers.

In the second round, Mike Hill's unbeaten half-century was the highlight of Shirehampton's nine-wicket success against Bristol United Banks.

Bristol West Indians have booked their place in the third round after beating Clevedon by 15 runs.

In the Preliminary round of the Plate competition, B Radford took 5-25 as Bradley Stoke beat Stoke Gifford by three wickets after chasing down 94.

Hengrove (96-8) went through after losing fewer wickets when finishing on the same total as opponents Taveners (96-8).

University of Bristol Staff eased home by three wickets against Churchways, who had made 77 in their first innings.

Parish Harper hit a century, while Barry Gale finished seven short of a hundred as Phoenix West Indians crushed Southmead by 105 runs on Tuesday.

But the Henleaze-outfit couldn't make it two wins in as many days after bowing out in the first round to Twyford House, who won by 66 runs on Wednesday. Adam Robson's 128 not out guided Lodway to a 30-run success against Cleeve. F Basdale hit 65 for Cleeve.
