1966: England's David Bryant won the singles title at the inaugural World Bowls Championship in Sydney. The event was organised because the sport had been left out of that year's Commonwealth Games in Jamaica.
1972: The career of England and Stoke goalkeeper Gordon Banks was cut short when he lost an eye following a car crash near his home.
2006: Fernando Alonso retained his F1 drivers' title with second place in the Brazilian Grand Prix.
