1979: Greta Weitz of Norway became the first woman to run a marathon in under two hours and 30 minutes when she clocked 2:27.33 in the New York City Marathon, an event she won nine times.

1984: Austrian driver Niki Lauda clinched the Formula One world title for the third time when finishing second in the final grand prix of the season in Portugal.

1998: Midfielder Paul Ince was charged with misconduct by the Football Association for making a V-sign after being sent off while on England duty in Sweden.

2003: Martin Leslie was banned for 12 weeks after being found guilty of kneeing an opponent during Scotland's 39-15 World Cup win over USA.

2004: England captain Jonny Wilkinson was ruled out of action for seven weeks because of heavy bruising to his upper right arm, missing the series of autumn internationals.

2007: Kimi Raikkonen won the Brazilian Grand Prix and with it the Formula One drivers' championship. Britain's Lewis Hamilton finished seventh and missed out on the world title, ending the season one point behind Raikkonen.
