1971: Ted MacDougall scored nine goals for Bournemouth in the first round of the FA Cup against Margate – the most scored by a player in the competition proper in a single match.

1977: Walter Payton, of the Chicago Bears, rushed for an NFL single-game record 275 yards against the Minnesota Vikings.

1982: A record 15 footballers were sent off, 12 in FA Cup matches and three in the league.
