It happened on this day in sport – December 4
1948: Denis Compton hit 300 in 181 minutes for England's MCC tourists against Northern Transvaal to set a new record for the fastest triple-century in first-class cricket.
2003: Leeds United announced "the first stage of a financial restructuring programme" and avoided becoming the first Premier League club to go into administration.
2005: Real Madrid sacked coach Wanderley Luxemburgo after 11 months at the Bernabeu. Reserve team coach Juan Ramon Lopez Caro was placed in charge provisionally, becoming the sixth coach in as many years.
2006: Liverpool confirmed they had "entered into a period of exclusive negotiations with Dubai International Capital about a possible investment in the club". It was, however, Americans George Gillett and Tom Hicks who eventually took over the Reds.
