WHAT a great idea by Nigel Howe to rebuild the Dutch House.

Unfortunately I was born six years after the Second World War ended so I was never able to see this magnificent building in all its glory.

However I have many pictures of it in books by the late Bristol historian Reece Winstone which I treasure.

If I was wealthy enough I would finance the whole project myself so good luck to you Mr Howe, all power to your elbow.

“I'm glad others see the potential for this opportunity. Nobody could disagree that the derelict concrete bank buildings on this site are an ugly jumble not befitting the very centre of this proud city. What better replacement than the reinstatement of the beautiful timbered building that used to stand on this very spot?

For some reason post war British planners seemed intent on sweeping away historic remains and ushering in windswept and soul-less concrete precincts. Many European cities devastated by wartime bombing were rebuilt as they once were. Google search Ypres, Warsaw, Dresden, Caen etc. for some inspiration of what was achieved for places that were totally obliterated, and then totally restored.

I'd like to think that Bristol can muster up the energy to reinstate just one beautiful old building that once stood at its historic heart for hundreds of years.”
