New names are just the start for Bristol's museums

Saturday, October 31, 2009, 07:00

All of Bristol's museums could be renamed and given a new image as part of a "re-branding" of the service.

Bristol City Council has hired Manchester-based company True North to re-brand the museum service as a whole, at a cost of £73,000.

The firm's remit includes new logos, marketing and uniforms to create a more modern image.

It comes as work on the city's new museum, to be called M-Shed, continues on the Harbourside.

The name for the £26-million project was dreamt up by council staff after the original building on the spot where the museum is being built.

Acting head of museum service Paul Barnett confirmed the council was looking at new names for the other buildings.

This could include City Museum, Blaise Castle, Red Lodge, Georgian House and the Bristol Record Office.

But do not expect to see G-Shed or R-Shed any time soon.

Mr Barnett said the City Museum and Art Gallery was likely to be officially renamed the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery to give it a stronger identity.

He said although some people may be concerned at the lack of the work museum in M-Shed, it could attract people who ordinarily would not go to visit one.

Have your say

With an increase in thuggish behaviour blighting Bristol's streets should the government be doing more to tackle ASBO culture?
