Council worked paint warning signs . . . outside closed Portishead schools

Saturday, October 31, 2009, 07:00

Council workmen have repainted warning signs outside two Portishead schools – despite the fact they are both closed.

North Somerset Council's contractors repainted the yellow 'School – Keep Clear' markings on the road outside St Barnabas School and the derelict St Joseph's Primary School in West Hill.

St Joseph's School has been empty for six years after students moved to a new £2 million state of the art complex in 2003. Education bosses closed St Barnabas School in August this year because of the falling number of pupils.

A North Somerset Council spokesman admitted the lines had been painted by mistake.

The council spokesman said: "It was a mistake and the lines were repainted as part of a routine maintenance programme.

"We will remove them as soon as possible."

With an increase in thuggish behaviour blighting Bristol's streets should the government be doing more to tackle ASBO culture?
