Young Bristol golfers enjoy their taste of international experience

Wednesday, June 24, 2009, 07:00

Bristol's talented England Under-18 players, Adam Carson and Chris Lloyd, are home after two fantastic international experiences.

Kendleshire's Lloyd helped the England Boys team fill third place behind Argentina and the United States in the World Junior Team championships in Japan.

Long Ashton's Carson made a creditable debut in the 2009 FootJoy Invitational Under-18 tournament in North Carolina. After climbing to eighth at one stage he finished 38th.

Lloyd started with a four-under-par 67 in the Am-Am that opened the tournament.

Then he suffered a slight shoulder injury that affected him for the rest of the week.

He shot 73 in his opening round followed by a superb three-under 68, another 73, and a final day 70 for a level par return for the 72 holes.

Carson was full of admiration for his expenses-paid trip to America.

He said: "The facilities were great and so was the course at Sedgefield Country Club in Greensboro, but it was difficult as the temperature was 35 degrees and the humidity 85 per cent. I played very steady for the first two days and had nine good holes on the third day when I moved to eighth, but then I slipped down. My main aim was to make the cut which I did comfortably."

He arrived home at Nailsea in time to play in the final major of the season, the Berkshire Trophy. It had bitter-sweet memories for he damaged his foot there last year and was out for several weeks. This time he finished seventh on seven under par shooting 70, 70, 72 and a closing 68.
