Lloyd lands Junior Masters title with course record

Wednesday, July 01, 2009, 08:00

Chris Lloyd produced another stunning record-making display to win the prestigious Sir Henry Cooper Junior Masters at Nizels in Kent.

The 17-year-old Kendleshire player carded a nine-under-par 63 as he made up a four-stroke deficit in the final round to win by four over his Gloucestershire and England colleague Adam Carson (Long Ashton).

It was his third course record in a remarkable season following his new marks at Filton, where he won the county championship, and at Broadstone in the South West Counties strokeplay.

Lloyd, just back from helping England win a bronze medal in the World Boys Team Championships in Japan, finished on 23-under-par 265 (70-65-67-63).

In the final round he spun back a 100-yard sand wedge over water into the hole for an eagle two at the 348-yard seventh as he went out in 31 strokes.

He followed with four successive birdies from the 11th, and a birdie on the 17th was the ninth in a round that also contained two bogeys.

Lloyd, whose handicap is almost down to plus four, said: "Although this was my first national win this year I am enjoying an excellent season."

Carson started the final day two behind Italian Filippo Zucchetti and finished with an impressive 66.

Lloyd and Carson are off to Holland on Friday as members of the four-player England team competing in the European Championships.

● Juniors Sam Morgan (Bristol & Clifton) and Laurie Potter (Minchinhampton) made a huge impact as Gloucestershire continued their unbeaten run in the Channel League with a 12.5-2.5 win over Wiltshire at Knowle.

Both sides were depleted and the newcomers won their foursomes 4 and 3 as the home side led 3.5-1.5 at lunch.

They followed with singles successes as Gloucestershire took the afternoon session 9-1.

Captain Nigel Thompson said: "Both lads have shown great potential in the junior matches and I thought it was time for them to prove themselves in the first team – and they did really well."

Nick Day (Henbury), Rich Carter (Lansdown), Andy Hale and Dave Wood (Chipping Sodbury), Thompson (Brickhampton Court) and Tim Clink (Lilley Brook) also won while Andy Rudge (Bristol and Clifton) and Ross Langdon (Minchinhampton) gained halves.

● Farrington are staging a charity day, played as a fourball bowmaker (£100 a team), in aid of MLDUK Lymfund on Tuesday, July 7.

● Filton's nine-day centenary festival starts on Saturday with a series of special competitions. This features open events on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Ashley Mansell won a four-hole play-off against Alex Godley to win Clevedon's club championship after both had carded 147 over 36 holes. Lizzie Stephens posted 160 to win the women's title.
