Hambrook pro Jones tipped for a bright future

Hambrook Golf Centre professional Trevor Jones could become a leading force in professional golf, according to Peter Laugher, the PGA Executive Committee vice-chairman and West Region PGA chairman.

He should know, for they were pitched together by chance in the annual White Hart Hotel Fourball Betterball tournament at Launceston which they won by two shots.

Devon pro Laugher, aged 52, from Thurlestone, said: "He was a delight to play with and is a name to watch out for in the future. He's an excellent player.

"We hadn't met until we were introduced at the North Wilts pro-am. I've had some guys who have worked with me who have gone on tour but he's as good as anyone I have played with. He's confident without being cocky, is very skilful, flights the ball well and has a good short game and full control of the ball.

"Now he needs to find a sponsor to enable him to concentrate on playing to reach the top."

Jones, 26, who won the Welsh National Championship last year, has enjoyed further success this season, although he failed to make the cut on his European tour debut in the Celtic Manor Wales Open earlier this month.

He recently led the 15 West Powerade Assistants qualifiers at Taunton Vale to reach the 54-hole final at The London Club in August.

In Cornwall the makeshift pair shot a remarkable 10-under-par 60 in the second round – the best of the tournament – after a modest 65 on the opening day. It was all the more notable because the weather at the time was vile.

"We played very well together and only dropped one shot in 36 holes – and that was on the first in the opening round," said Laugher. "We dovetailed perfectly."

David Haines (Brean) and Mark Luckett (Wheathill) were also paired together for the first time and came second, winning £650 each.
