Disaster for Wood as his golf clubs go missing

Tuesday, June 30, 2009, 07:00

Nailsea golfer Chris Wood travels to Paris today with hope his main emotion.

Firstly, he hopes that as first reserve a competitor will pull out of the French Open and its £3.3 million prize fund.

Secondly, he hopes that British Airways will find his golf clubs after they were lost in transit back from the BMW Invitational Open in Munich.

His clubs were last seen in Munich when he checked them in for the British Airways 5.15pm flight back to Heathrow.

Although he arrived safely in the UK, his clubs never made it back and BA are currently trying to locate them in the melee that happened because of a luggage glitch at Terminal Five.

At 6ft 5ins it is not feasible to take another set of golf clubs off the peg and he now has to sit and wait for BA to call to say they have found his clubs.

In the meantime, Wood was told yesterday he had become the first reserve for the tournament, which meant he had to fly out to the course to prepare in case he is called up.

He said: "You have to be prepared to play and that means taking part in practice rounds and hanging around should anyone pull out.

"This is a big weekend in terms of money on offer, so I really want to be a part of it.

"The winner will walk away with £595,000, which is a big pay cheque in anyone's language."

Awaiting calls from his management team he admits can be annoying.

He said: "It can be incredibly frustrating having to wait on a telephone call but that's the situation I find myself in this year and I always knew it was going to be the case.

"It will be a different scenario next year when I will be guaranteed entry into all the main events so it's just a matter of grinning and bearing it this year."

Bristol's David Dixon has made the starting line up but Portishead's John Morgan looks as though he will miss out on the trip to France.
