Bristol's Barwood and Morgan hoping to shine in Faldo Series final

Bristol teenagers Hannah Barwood and Sam Morgan set off on Friday for a great South American golfing adventure to the 2016 Olympic city of Rio de Janeiro.

Both have qualified to spend a week with 68 other young golfers from 11 countries to play in the 13th Faldo Series Grand Final at Itanhanga Golf Club.

England international and world-traveller Barwood, 19, from Knowle, knows exactly what to expect as she is playing in her fifth Faldo final and won this event last year.

It was also in Brazil but at a different venue, the Costa Do Sauipe Resort. This took her to the Asian Final last March in China, where another victory in the Under-21 girls section earned this return trip to Brazil.

But for Morgan, 18, from Bristol & Clifton, it will be an eye-opening experience. The Gloucestershire county junior, who played in two Channel League matches this summer, will be making his first golfing trip overseas.

It should be sweltering in Brazil, a sharp contrast to the September day at the Vale of Glamorgan where a saturated course, sheeting rain and high winds made conditions almost impossible at the Under-18 event which Morgan eventually won by one shot with a 36-hole total of 12-over-par.

He said: "The course was almost unplayable and they were the worst conditions I had played in. I got through when I holed a 40-foot putt on the last hole – it was the best putt of my life.

"It's going to be great to meet Nick Faldo and be closely involved on such a great trip. I just hope I can do myself justice.

"It is a chance to see how well I compare against the others from across the world."

Two-handicapper Morgan, who lives in Kingswood, is in his second and final year of a sports science course at Filton College after leaving Kingsfield School. He has chosen his favourite golfer, Tiger Woods, as his case study.

Barwood, who is eligible to play in the series for the next two years, faces tough opposition in the 54-hole strokeplay event. Fellow internationals Carly Booth, Holly Clyburn and Victoria Bradshaw are in the field.

She gave an insight into what Morgan can expect. She said: "Nick Faldo runs clinics and he came on course to watch us. We also had one-to-one sessions with his fitness coach.

"You get really well looked after – it's like a professional event."

Five winners will be invited to the Faldo Series Asia Grand Final in China. The overall boy and girl champion from the young players from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Russia, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay will receive a start in a European Tour and Ladies European Tour event next year.
