Three-goal Mizir crushes Rangeworthy
Star Match: Filton Athletic 4 Rangeworthy 1: GFA Junior Cup first round: Chris Mizir stole the show with a hat-trick as Filton Atheltic, of the Suburban League, came out comfortable victors over District League opponents Rangeworthy, in the first round of the GFA Junior Cup.
Mizir scoed twice to give Filton a 2-0 lead and, although Josh Duncan grabbed one back for Rangeworthy, Matt Price made it 3-1 just before half-time and Mizir completed his hat-trick midway through the second half.
Filton manager, Darren Jones, said: "It was our best performance for a long time. The players showed a lot of character today and hopefully we can keep it going."
The first half was more exciting than the second, with Filton having much the better of things and going in front early on. Mizir latched on to a Luke Walker flick, controlled the ball with his head and hammered a half-volley into the bottom left corner of the net.
Filton dominated possession and continued to create chances. Paul Woodrow showed great feet outside the area before playing a clever through ball to Walker. The Filton player aimed his shot for the near post but the angle was acute and his strike was easily saved by Rangeworthy goalkeeper Mark Smith.
The home side finally managed to convert their pressure into a second goal – with Mizir the man on target again. He finished well after showing good close control to beat two defenders inside the penalty area.
Rangeworthy started to come more into the game after Filton's second goal and should have reduced the deficit when home keeper Gary Keary came out and caught a free-kick only to drop at the feet of Duncan, whose first-time shot was cleared off the line by the impressive Mike Humby.
The visitors were rewarded for their efforts late in the half. Sean Cornock played a decent pass to Duncan, who had made a good run into the right of the box.
Duncan did a 360-degree turn around his marker before curling a fine finish into the top left corner. But their joy was short-lived as Filton hit straight back to restore their two-goal advantage following an error by keeper Smith.
Woodrow whipped in a corner close to the goal line where Smith fumbled the ball, leaving Price with the simplest of finishes.
Filton started the second half strongly and Mizir missed a good chance to make it 4-1 when he reacted quickest to a loose ball inside the box only to shoot just wide.
The game became more even as the half wore on, with both sides struggling to create any clear-cut chances, but Mizir wasn't finished and he struck again to complete his hat-trick and end any lingering hopes of a Rangeworthy comeback.
Receiving the ball from a throw, he moved into the area and finished well past Smith.
Undoubtedly, Filton were the worthy winners. They played the better football, had the greater possession and created more chances. Their two central midfielders, Woodrow and Price, were very impressive. The pair could both pass the ball and were willing to get stuck in when necessary. Most of Filton's moves went through the duo as they ran the show.
Mizir showed he was a force to be reckoned with up front. He was a handful all match for Rangeworthy and took his hat-trick well.
Defensively Filton looked strong, in particular Martin Sims, who made a number of good challenges and looked a real leader.
Rangeworthy struggled to match up to Filton in the middle of the park and that proved the real difference.
