Thornbury keep up good run

Sunday, February 15, 2009, 23:05

Thornbury Town continued their good run with a 2-0 win at DRG Stapleton, but the score would have been different if the home side had taken two chances they created in the opening five minutes.

First, Clinton Wilson outstripped the Thornbury defence but shot wide with only the advancing keeper Rob Malcolm to beat, then Justin Bishop headed just wide from a corner.

Thornbury's first attempt on goal saw a header cleared off the line by Ben Chantrell, with all the Thornbury players appealing for a goal.

Thornbury opened the scoring on 30 minutes after a mix-up in the DRG defence allowed Steve Rice an easy tap-in.

The home side created a great opportunity to level early in the second half when Bishop's cross slipped past everybody when only a slight touch could have ended in a goal.

Midway through the second half Thornbury scored a lucky goal when James Derosa's shot took a slight deflection that deceived the keeper and ended up in the back of the net.

DRG hit the woodwork twice and also saw a deflected free-kick from the edge of the box go straight to the keeper.

Yate Town Reserves came out on top in their top-of-the-table clash with King's Stanley.

A Justin Cattle hat-trick, which included two penalties, plus one from Jack Smyth gave Yate a 3-0 half-time lead.

King's Stanley hit back after the break with a good 25-minute spell which saw them pull two goals back, both through Tony Francis.

Yate then got back into their stride with another penalty – again converted by Cattle – to seal a 4-2 win.

Henbury got back to winning ways with an emphatic 4-0 victory over B&W Avonside, with two goals each for Jermaine Wright and Shane Hobbs.

Wright netted first in the 12th minute, although he was lucky as the ball struck his shin and ended up in the goal.

Hobbs made it 2-0 on 28 minutes with a superb 25-yard lob which gave the keeper no chance. Wright made it three a minute before the break after making a solo run that took him past two defenders before squeezing the ball in from a narrow angle.

Hobbs completed the scoring with a 30-yard screamer on 70 minutes.

A minute before the break, Henbury took a 3-0 lead when Wright went on a solo run and beat two defenders before squeezing the ball past the visitors' keeper from a narrow angle.

The final goal came in the 70th minute and was a 30-yard screamer from Hobbs. Henbury's defence were rarely troubled throughout.

Axa bounced back after two defeats with a 3-2 home victory over lowly Hanham Athletic.

However, it was Hanham who opened the scoring after two minutes, when a cross from the left found Richard Thomas unmarked and he drove a left foot volley into the net.

The home side drew level after 20 minutes when left-back Nathan Lumber drove a right-foot shot into the right-hand corner from 25 yards.

Axa took the lead in the 30th minute when veteran Neil Turner picked up the ball on the edge of the box and drifted past two defenders before coolly slotting the ball into the bottom left corner.

In the second half Axa created several good chances but Hanham kept them at bay and then levelled on the hour mark with a 35-yard free-kick from Mark Pocock which deflected off the wall to send the keeper the wrong way.

Axa snatched all three points in the 75th minute when a combination of passes from Andy Watts and Steve Watts resulted in Ryan McKillop's cross being met by full-back Nathan Lumber, who outjumped two defenders to head home from eight yards.
