AS a royalist I wholeheartedly endorse the view of historian and MP Chris Skidmore who believes a "full state funeral" should be arranged if DNA tests confirm a skeleton with spinal abnormalities and a cleaved in skull, recently found under a Leicester car park proves to be King Richard III. In this regard therefore I was disappointed to read in the Post's article that his Parliamentary campaign has not been enthusiastically received so far by the majority of Mr Skidmore's fellow MPs. Apparently Kerry McCarthy the Labour MP for Bristol East thinks it is a "ridiculous idea" because of the current state of the Nation's economy.

Even in these straightened times however, there are important issues such as this which should not be decided on a financial basis alone. As a child I remember the thrill of seeing the film (starring Laurence Olivier) as Richard III which resulted in history becoming my favourite school subject. Yorkist King Richard ruled England from 1483 to 1485 and he was just three years old when the Wars of the Roses broke out between the houses of Lancaster and York. Despite his reputation as a controversial monarch Richard later proved himself to be courageous in their continuing battles and when the Yorkists staged their successful fightback in 1471 Richard was in the forefront of Yorkist victories at Barnet, Hertfordshire and at Tewkesbury, Gloucester. Sadly due to physical deformity his nickname was Richard Crookback and the Plantagenet King finally met an untimely end at the Battle of Bosworth Field where he was ignominiously killed by the victorious Lancastrians and the first Tudor King Henry VII ascended the Throne of England.

Although Richard was King for little more than two years he became the last English monarch to die in Battle. Surely therefore, if his remains have now been discovered – at the very least his nobility deserves a dignified burial in hallowed ground. In this regard I sincerely hope the Parliamentarians will think again and warmly support Chris Skidmore in his efforts to honour the long dead king.
