The Duchess of Cambridge has set tongues wagging after appearing to let slip she is expecting a baby girl.

The future queen appeared to drop her guard yesterday on a visit to Grimsby, reportedly telling a woman who gave her a teddy bear: “Thank you, I will take that for my d...” before cutting herself off.

The exchange was heard by Sandra Cook, 67, who told reporters: “I leant over and said to her: 'You were going to say daughter weren't you?'.

“She said, 'No, we don't know!'. I said, 'Oh I think you do,' to which she replied: 'We're not telling'.”

Kate was handed the teddy by 41-year-old Diana Burton.

But the Duchess was more cautious during other conversations. When asked by a woman: “Can you feel the baby kicking?”, she replied: “Yes. I can feel it kicking.”

St James’s Palace did not comment on the matter.

Kate met dozens of well-wishers during her visit to Grimsby yesterday, and was taken on a tour of the Fishing Heritage Centre, Peaks Lane Fire Station and Havelock Academy.

If the royal couple do have a baby girl she could one day become queen. A bill changing the law of succession to allow a first-born female to inherit the throne is soon expected to become law.
