We should have a free trade zone
IT was very welcome news to read South Bristol is to have a business park creating new homes and hundreds of jobs in this deprived area of Bristol. We should acknowledge the city council's initiative for this project which will see millions invested in this exciting scheme.
And while a new business park is great news in these difficult times, what an incredible step it would be for one of the mayoral candidates to announce they would initiate the first Free Trade Zone in the UK, perhaps on industrial land at Avonmouth, with easy access to the motorways. As an experiment this zone would not have entrepreneurs starting a business in England or Bristol, and like the launch of the Bristol Pound would make world headlines?
Having visited free trade zone factories in the Far East, they are not the sad sweatshops we traditionally associate with poorly regulated businesses. From my own experience the workers are happy and contented, with western companies keen to set up business without a great deal of the regulatory nonsense employers have to suffer in this country.
But don't take my word for it, one of the leading mayoral candidates should visit these free trade zones and make their own mind up on the viability of a different approach to attracting new businesses and jobs to Bristol. Otherwise from what I have read about the mayoral candidates intentions to promote new jobs and business opportunities for Bristol, we may as well find that venerable gentleman who used to walk around town with a large sign stating 'The end is nigh' and change his message to read 'Bristol is closed for business'.
