In third place in this year's Building Health Communities competition is the 1st Bristol Muslim Scout Group, which collected 170,000 points, or about 1,700 individual tokens.

Based in Muller Road, the group was formed in 2003 to give boys and girls of all faiths the chance to enjoy adventure and fun activities.

Today it has more than 50 members, aged between six and 14, across its beavers, cubs and scouts.

Over the years parents and volunteers worked on the concrete hall, painting it and fitting out the kitchen with cabinets.

Now, after winning work worth £1,000 from Leadbitter, it can replace old toilets and sinks in the scout hut, have hot water and possibly showers.

Amir Cheema, 42, the scout leader who founded the group, told one of the packs at its meeting on Wednesday, and sent messages to other parents.

He said: "Everyone was really excited and happy about the award. We are thrilled to have come third, and now we will be able to prioritise what we want to do.

"We really want new toilets installed and the sinks and water fixing.

"It will mean that they can do more mucky and dirty activities, like putting up tents, growing things for their environmental badge and painting, and then be able to get cleaned up."

Mr Cheema, a senior project manager for Orange, from Westbury-on-Trym, said collecting for the competition had brought the youngsters together with the local community.

He said: "It has created a great community spirit. We got everyone behind the project to collect the tokens, and that has been really beneficial.

"They talked to their friends at school, shop keepers and taxi drivers to ask them to collect the tokens.

"It helped the youngsters get out there and develop a do-it-yourself attitude, and gave them a common focus.

"A lot of the work, such as texting, e-mailing and speaking to family and friends, was done by the young people, and it gives them a real sense of pride that they have done that and they can see a result at the end of it.

"Once they see the work done they will see it is something they have achieved, and that will give them confidence. We will also be able to get more community use out of the scout hall, and groups will be happier to rent it and use it once there are working toilets and sinks.

"Winning this work is a great result for us and we are really looking forward to getting it done."
