■ More women are being treated successfully and more babies being born with the help of IVF than ever before in the UK.

■ For the first time, the number of women having successful IVF treatment has topped 10,000.

■ There were 10,242 births resulting in 12,596 babies in 2006, a 13 per cent rise on the number of births in the previous year, figures from the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority have revealed.

■The latest HFEA figures show that the highest overall rate of live births per IVF treatment cycle is now 23.1 per cent. In 1992, when the HFEA first started collecting data, the live birth rate was 13 per cent.

■ For women under 35 using their own fresh eggs, the live birth rate was 31 per cent compared with 29.6 per cent in 2005.

■ For women over the age of 40 using their own fresh eggs, the rate increased from 0.8 per cent in 2005 to four per cent in 2006.
