I WAS interested to read about Steve England's love of Stoke Park and his ghost walks.

He talks of Elizabeth Somerset, the 17-year-old daughter of the fourth Duke of Beaufort. In 1760 she was thrown by her horse, landed awkwardly and broke her neck and died. But her spirit haunts the park even to this day. He says that people often hear the beating of a horse's hoofs in this woodland. Steve heard them once and, so convinced they were real, he stopped to let the horse pass. When he looked around there was no horse there and he was terrified. He has also seen the spirit of Elizabeth, Steve said the park is also haunted by Elizabeth's father Charles Somerset, fourth Duke of Beaufort who died in 1753. A memorial commemorating his life is now lost in the woods.

There is an historic story here. What is the story of the Beauforts? The name sounds French. In particular what is the story of the Somerset family and how did Charles die? Elizabeth was a daughter of this story, bereaved of her father Charles five years before her own death. Elizabeth died an instant, violent death, inevitably in a state of shock at the young and vulnerable age of 17 years.

I understand that people who die like this, in a state of shock, sometimes have difficulty in embracing death. I experienced this with my great grandfather, James White, a compositor in Bristol. This compelled me to research the family story. As an outcome of this, peace then prevailed after a tragic experience had influenced the next three generations.

It seems to me that Elizabeth and Charles are literally haunted by their family story, which may have influenced her shocking death. Experience not lived out or acknowledged, feelings not communicated. Neither has been able to rest and die and we are drawing attention to their plight. It would be compassionate to ask an expert in the paranormal to witness their dilemma, give kind attention to the story, and reassure them that it is now time and safe to leave this world. Steve said: 'The dead chose this place to walk the Earth for all eternity'. Well, yes. They will be compelled to do so as they cannot complete their lives' journey without the witnessing and assistance of an earthly person, an intervention.

It would be helpful to research the Beaufort and Somerset story, with kind understanding of circumstances frozen in time which mean that Charles and Elizabeth cannot rest in peace. In relation to Elizabeth the name Catherine keeps coming to mind.

Of course this would end the ghost walks. They do not walk for entertainment of others, rather to draw attention to an incomplete story which they are haunted by.

I wonder what response there will be to this suggestion. I feel concern for these poor souls stranding in time and space. Please help them in their 250-year-old seeking of assistance.

“The problem isn't with "these poor souls stranding in time and space" as they don't actually exist. The problem is with those who believe in the existence of ghosts.”
