Most efficient waste option overlooked
Paul Harrod's approval (Open Lines, June 26) of the waste plant planned for Avonmouth is difficult to appreciate.
The consultants' report to the councils of Bristol, B&NES, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire, the basis of the public consultation exercise in 2007 on the disposal of residual waste, clearly showed the EFW (Energy From Waste) option to be the most efficient in reducing landfill.
EFW has an estimated residue of only seven per cent, almost one-third of the 20 per cent estimated to result from the plant now planned.
The Lib Dems choose to rename EFW as Mass-Burn Incinerator to mislead the public.
It is the solution in operation in several UK cities and the favoured option in much of Europe. It can be designed to make it acceptable in quite sensitive locations such as the plant on the foreshore in Southampton.
The flue gases are stringently treated to prevent nuisance and meet the very high European standards on emissions.
When are we going to get an explanation of why the Lib Dems choose to maximise landfill to the detriment of the council tax payer?
John Tanner, Henleaze.
