First our burger van, now our pool – what's next?

Tuesday, October 14, 2008, 08:00

I RECENTLY wrote to Open Lines concerning the plight of Dave Buljoo, whose snack bar van gave 14 years of loyal and excellent service to the Portishead commuters and then – for no apparent reason – was given the old heave-ho ("Why all this fuss over a harmless burger van?, September 9").

Now it seems as if the lovely open-air pool – which has also given many, many years of loyal and excellent service to the public – is about to go the same way.

The same council warlord has decided to close it down and states that it's highly weather-dependent.

If that's the case, what's next? The picturesque cricket ground that's weather-dependent?

Surely the public of Portishead want council members to enhance the lovely town of Portishead – not destroy it.

Why not use a bit of forward thinking and erect a dome over the pool, such as the ones at the Eden Project in Cornwall? Then, in years to come, Portishead can say: "Come and have a look at our lovely pool."

Or will they be saying: "Look at that ugly block of flats where our lovely pool once stood?"
