Pucklechurch house damage by fire

Tuesday, April 21, 2009, 07:00

A charger for a bath lift is thought to have caused a fire in a home belonging to an elderly couple in Pucklechurch.

Firefighters were called to the house in Queen's Road, pictured, at 8pm on Sunday to reports of a fire in an upstairs bedroom.

Engines from Kingswood, Yate, and Speedwell attended, and two firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the blaze.

The elderly couple living in the house were alerted by a neighbour who saw smoke coming from the upstairs window.

A smoke alarm was fitted, but did not work. The house was damaged by the smoke.

The fire is believed to have started after a charger for the bath lift was left on the bed, overheated and set alight.

An fire and rescue service spokesman said people should check smoke alarms every week and not leave chargers near flammable materials.
