Portishead open-air campaign an example to us all

Thursday, May 28, 2009, 07:00

With all the recent publicity about the re-opening of Portishead's open-air pool, it made me think why on earth did nothing similar go ahead all those years ago to the Tropicana in Weston?

I have lived in Weston now for nearly seven years and cannot believe the fiasco surrounding, what could be, yet another great outdoor pool for all to enjoy.

I am sick and tired of reading about all the setbacks and delays with the proposed Henry Boot development.

If a body such as Save Our Tropicana had been set up all those years ago, and a celebrity had got involved with the help of many volunteers, as happened at Portishead, then I feel the Tropicana could be up and running now, having been totally refurbished with the input of the local community. But, no.

Instead it's been left to decay and now many locals complain they do not want the new Lifestation@tropicana development at all.

So why didn't those who oppose this current scheme do something like they have in Portishead.

Then I am sure everyone would have been happy and the Tropicana would not have stood unused and empty for all these years.

I wait in anticipation to see if the Henry Boot scheme ever comes to fruition.
