Gloucestershire's Franklin left disappointed despite hat-trick

Tuesday, July 14, 2009, 07:00

James Franklin could not hide his disappointment at the end of day two at Cheltenham, despite grabbing Gloucestershire's first Championship hat-trick in nine seasons.

The New Zealand international dismissed Chris Rogers with his first ball in Derbyshire's second innings, having cleaned up their tail the previous day.

Team-mate Jon Lewis was the last man to achieve the feat – Nottinghamshire on the receiving end at Trent Bridge in 2000 – but Franklin was in no mood to crow about his achievement after the visitors reached stumps with only three wickets down and a daunting lead of 288.

"I had no idea I'd taken a hat-trick until the umpire reminded me about four overs into my spell," he said.

"I've taken one before in Test cricket but never in first-class, so that's nice, but we're pretty disappointed about how the day went as a whole."

Gloucestershire CCC were bowled out for 164 earlier in the piece, handing Derbyshire sizeable initiative after they amassed 326 in their first innings. Both Franklin and Kadeer Ali were bowled without playing shots, errors which the Kiwi partly put down to the swinging ball.

"Derbyshire got the ball swinging and bowled in really good areas throughout our innings," said Franklin.

"But we didn't really apply ourselves with the bat and a mixture of both those things meant we didn't get many runs.

"We're up against it now – we probably had to have them five or six down to be more in the game. We're a little bit out of it so we need to take some quick wickets"

Gloucestershire captain Alex Gidman was more positive about his side's chances. He said: "There have been some big chases at Cheltenham and the game is still only halfway through."
