Chippenham lose their unbeaten record

CAMBRIDGE CITY 1 CHIPPENHAM TOWN 0: In a match full of chances at either end, it was the home side that extended their unbeaten record at the expense of Chippenham's thanks to a single goal just before the hour mark.

Chippenham dominated the opening half an hour and three times caught the Cambridge defence sleeping with Ben Highmore clean through on goal.

On 10 minutes, the home side's Lee Chaffey was forced to haul Highmore down to deny him a clear run on goal, the Cambridge defender being somewhat fortunate to escape with only a yellow card.

Charlie Clough – on loan from Bristol Rovers – then split the Cambridge defence with an incisive pass only for Highmore's angled shot to be saved by Zac Barrett at his near post.

Laurie Stewart saved the home side as he cleared Scott Lye's cross from under his own bar.

Stewart then failed to notice Highmore, who intercepted the full-back's attempted pass back to Barrett, but the Chippenham striker could only hit his shot straight at the goalkeeper.

A deep ball into the Cambridge box from Shaun Lamb again saw Highmore lose his marker in the area, but his first time volley struck the crossbar.

Cambridge came back into the game before the break as Steve Gentle was twice denied by Chris Snoddy and Dave Theobald shot wide with the goal at his mercy.

On 50 minutes, Barrett safely held a headed effort from Highmore, while at the other end, Chaffey's shot from inside the six-yard box was deflected wide.

The winning goal came on 59 minutes when Chippenham conceded possession in their own half and the ball was crossed from right to left for John Frendo to give Snoddy no chance from 20 yards out.

Chippenham almost snatched a deserved equaliser on three separate occasions through substitute Jon Davies, but Barrett remained steadfast to the end.
