Bristol attack victim in fight for life

Tuesday, July 28, 2009, 07:00

A 29-year-old man from Bristol has been left fighting for his life after being assaulted in the street.

He suffered serious injuries in Bradley Stoke late on Saturday night and was in a critical condition at Frenchay Hospital on Monday night.

Two 15-year-old boys were arrested in connection with the attack in Pye Croft, close to the M4.

Neither had been charged on Monday night.

Residents told the Bristol Evening Post the attack had taken place near the junction of Pye Croft and Westfield Way at 11pm.

Neighbours said a woman living in a house near the scene of the beating went outside to find a man slumped on the pavement in a pool of blood.

One woman living in Westfield Way, who asked not to be named, said: "I looked out of my window and a group of residents were out in the street talking about what had happened and the police and ambulance service were there.

"It was all a bit surreal because it's normally such a quiet area.

"The woman across the road said her dog was barking at something, so she went outside and found the man on the pavement bleeding and called 999."

Another man, who lives in Westfield Way, said he had been told a bottle had been involved in the attack but said he had not seen what had happened.

Police sealed off Pye Croft and told residents they could not park their cars outside their homes after the assault.

Avon and Somerset police spokeswoman Catherine Foster said: "I can confirm that a 29-year-old man is currently in a serious condition in Frenchay Hospital following an assault in Pye Croft, Bradley Stoke, at around 11pm on Saturday.

"Two 15-year-olds have been arrested and are helping police with their inquiries."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or believes they have information which could help the inquiry should contact the police on 0845 4567000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
