Crowds flock to Bristol fireworks shows
Dozens of official and unofficial fireworks displays took part across the city to mark the 404th anniversary of the discovery of Guy Fawkes's bid to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605.
They included a "bangless" display at Bristol Zoo, with quiet fireworks so as not to frighten the animals. About 1,500 people attended the sell-out event, but although there were no bangs there was an unexpected sideshow when sparks from a firework briefly set light to a palm tree. Event manager Heather Holve said: "It was a fantastic night, even when a tree well away from the crowds and animals briefly caught fire."
About 2,000 people wrapped up to watch a firework display at St Patrick's Church in Redfield, which was marking its 19th year. Thousands also attended a musical firework display at Keynsham Rugby Club, which was delayed slightly due to the numbers of people arriving.
Bristol Zoo stages another bangless display tonight, while other major displays include the Great Western Round Table display at the King George V playing fields in Downend. Tickets for the Downend show cost £3 for children, £5 for adults.
