SCORES of angry Portishead residents packed a public meeting to send a clear message to Tesco bosses – we don't want you in our town.

Around 100 people attended the consultation meeting last night, held by the company to discuss its plans to turn the former Royal Oak pub in West Hill into a Tesco Express.

The retail giant has signed a lease on the pub, which closed last year, with owners Enterprise Inns.

It plans to open the store in the New Year, creating 20 new jobs.

Because the pub is classed as a retail business, no change of use planning permission is needed.

At the heated meeting resident and retired publican, Malcolm James, 66, who lives near the proposed store, said: "Tesco has caused problems in Bristol, a lot of upheaval in Weston and has now arrived in Portishead.

"There are more than 2,000 people who have signed a petition against the new store. Why don't you pack your bags, clean up after yourself and leave? You are not wanted here."

Other residents said the arrival of Tesco would signal the death knell for other businesses in the area.

West Hill resident Pat Gardener, 54, said: "Our little West Hill community is slowly dying and we are angry and fed up. We have lost our pub, our post office and our school already.

"A lot of people are against Tesco coming here as it will decimate the trade of existing shops.

"This is about the big boys walking in and all over the little people."

Other residents raised concerns about extra traffic, noise and antisocial behaviour.

A Tesco Action Group has already been set up to fight the proposals.

Chairman Paul Dunn said: "There is a real concern for road safety as Avon Way is a very busy road and the pub is on a blind bend. What is Tesco going to do to ensure people's safety?"

Tesco corporate affairs manager Sophie Akokhia said the store did not need planning permission and could 'start selling beans tomorrow' if it so wished. But she stressed the point of the meeting was to get feedback from local residents which could be used to shape the proposals.

The store is likely to open from either 6am to 10pm or 7am to 11pm, seven days a week.

“Hillcran you are right it's all about greed an application was put to Enterprise inns for a youth center in the pub which would have been a lot better for the community but that will never happen”

SUBMIT YOUR OBJECTIONS TO PLANNING APPLICATIONS BY THE END OF TOMORROW.

very important step if you oppose.. Spread the word!”

“Are pubs really "the centre of the community" anyway?

I've been to the pub once since I've lived in my village (3 years). I cannot afford to drink regularly in a pub - who can, at £3-£4 for a pint of beer?!? Many pubs are just empty shells, so - unfortunate as it is - you can see why the pubco landlords might want to, er, diversify into supermarket rental.”

“The fact is that Tesco don't care if they're welcome or not. Ask most people in the country what they think of Tesco slowly taking over the highstreets of the land, and anywhere else, and chances are they'll say they don't like it. There are people like me who refuse to use their stores and as there are cheaper places to buy your groceries, with better quality than Tesco, that isn't exactly difficult. The people of Stoke Croft even made them really unwelcome but guess what? They are still there and that's because the sad fact is people will use this store, like they use all the others & that's all Tesco care about.”

“I think most people are missing the point. It doesn't matter if its Tesco or whomever but the more local pubs that get lost forever the more focal community meeting places disappear. I haven't lived in the town long enough to know much about the Royal Oak but I am aware of how it is large faceless corporations like Enterprise Inns who are making their own pubs unprofitable to be successful and are happoier selling them off or leasing them to get a better income from them. Enterepirse Inns, just like Tescos and the other multinationals are out to make profit, have no concern about communites or danger they may cause to the success of other local businesses. It is purely about money, and people wonder why community values are reducing all the time. I read an interesting article recently that referred to the majority of people as being sheeple and I think that sums up the future of this country as everyone gets hyped 24 hours a day to 'shop here' 'drink coffee here' 'vote here' 'wear this designer label' etc the sad thing is the mentality of so many people these days is to believe the hype and become sheeple not free thinking individuals. Communities aren't dying off, they are being strangled by the shareholders of the big companies who have to keep getting bigger to satisfy greed.”

“Nobody complained in Portishead when Sainsburys wanted to build a supermarket there (except the Cooperative).

Nobody complained and/or rioted when Sainsburys took over the former off-licence on the Gloucester Road.

I'm really not defending them, but why does Tesco take the flak when the other supermarkets are just as predatory?

I live in Pill. We had a Cooperative Food and a Nisa. The family that ran the Nisa left, and the Nisa has been replaced with ... another Cooperative! I would have loved a Tesco Express rather than having two Coops as the only food stores in the village.”

“Why does a bunch of jealous anti capitalist protesters always try to tell others where they should shop.
Give over Jimbob, if I want to shop at Tesco I will, I don't need people like yourself or corncups and the prsc telling me any different.”

“Redmike – you have a good point and in theory, if no one uses the store, it should go out of business. You are also correct that unfortunately, when a store like this opens, it is used by lots of people. But, unfortunately the majority of these people don't give a s*** about local businesses or ethical practice, because it's far simpler and less stressful to their incredibly stressful lives, to just give in, bend over and take it up the a**.

As for the cooperative - good idea. However, when this tries to happen, it never seems to please people. It usually goes something like this…..Person A:"If you don't want a tesco store, stop moaning and open a cooperative you lefty t***". Protester: "Yes, I'm doing this". Person A: "What a stupid idea to open a cooperative, you stupid hippy t***".”

“The clue to the reason why The Oak shut in the first place is in the article. It reads: "signed a lease.........with owners Enterprise Inns."”
