“@Nobbygas If phone hacking was common practice at NOTW, as it appears to be, it's difficult to argue that Rebekah Brooks - and likewise Murdoch - knew nothing about it. But I'm sure NOTW is not the only tabloid rag which has used despicable methods such as this to get stories.”

“I'm willing to bet Murdoch knew nothing about it. Why would he? He doesn't have anything to do with the running of the newspaper. Funny that when Murdoch supported the Labour Party, you never heard any murmurs against him or his companies.
and what is it about Cheltenham Road/Stokes Croft? First, people want to dictate what stores can, or cannot open there. Next, the original poster is trying to dictate what can be sold in the shops. What happened to Freedom of Choice?
PeterBaxter - I'm pretty sure that all of the newspapers are guilty of similar deeds, which is why they have all been pretty quiet over the last couple of years in reporting it. However, it looks as though the NotW went further than most. If politicians and celeb' are too stupid to change the default PIN of their phone mail account, then they are basically leaving the door wide open. To call it 'hacking' is wrong in my opinion. However, to use the same tactic against murder victims or families of the deceased on 7/7 is stepping way way over the mark.”

“Unfortunately, Tesco took a rather different view of matters this morning. A customer discovered that News International titles were back on display. When the staff refused to remove them, he tore a copy of the Times in half. He was then detained in the back office whilst the police were summoned. The police offered him the option of Restorative Justice, which would have involved apologising for doing his moral duty, and he therefore refused this option. He was then handcuffed, removed to Trinity Road police station, and served with an £80 penalty notice. He wishes it to be known that he is extremely proud of what he has done, and thoroughly commends this course of action to anyone else with a conscience.”

“NOTW is a mere drop in the ocean for a mogul like Murdoch. Of course heads should roll over this phone hacking scandal. But will they? The best thing that could happen is that any company with ad space in NOTW - Morrisons, Tescos et al - stops doing business with them immediately.”

“Fair question Nobby, especially considering my vocal support for the Stokes Croft Tesco in the face of the hipster riots in April, which indeed seemed to be about dictating what other people can or cannot buy.
My answer:- I agree that, for the most part, people should be able to shop and interact without hindrance. However, this right is not universal. For example, news agencies are quite rightly prohibited from selling child porn. Similarly, I don't think commercial organizations ought to be allowed to profit from hacking into the voicemail of a missing teenage girl, exploiting the hopes and fears of her relatives and friends, and suborning the very police officers investigating her disappearance. I am very far from being anti-business. I just think that business has to be held up to certain standards. In this instance, it's not a RIGHT to dictate what other people buy or sell. It's a DUTY.”

“The saga continues. I left my mobile at home yesterday. When I got home, there was a message on it from the policewoman, asking me to call her. I want to know how she obtained my mobile number. I didn't give it to her, and it's payg. So about 20 minutes ago, i tried to ring her. When she calls back, i am going to order her to tell me exactly where she got my number from. Anyone got any ideas as to how she might have managed this?”

“Joh_Name,
I'm with Nobbygas on this one. Your one-man censorship campaign proves only that you find whatever you want to be morally justifiable, and whatever you don't agree with to be an ethical problem in need of direct action. I feel sorry for you, but a little uncomfortable. It will be book burning next, what they called it Säuberung once.”

Maybe a close relative or friend of yours has been in a bad accident, and the Police are trying to contact relatives using the numbers on their mobile phone. As you are humpfing about the nasty Police getting your number, maybe there is a relative or close friend of yours in need of help? Just a thought.”

“@Nobby
I never said that there couldn't possibly be a reasonable explanation for her having my number. I just want to know what that explanation is, that's all. And the fact that this happened so soon after my dealings with the police quite naturally makes me suspect that she may have obtained my number by underhand means. I will be delighted to be proved wrong, as in general I support the police. I certainly consider them to have done an excellent job during April's hipster riots.”

“@Tony
"If everyone went into a supermarket and tore up a newspaper, then refused to pay for it,the circulation would increase, and the treasury would benefit from all the £80 fines. That would teach them."
Firstly, how would everyone tearing up a copy of the Times increase its circulation? I don't understand. Secondly, I'm not wingeing about the £80 fine. That's the price I had to pay for making my point. No big deal. At least, as you say, the Treasury benefits.
"I'm with Nobbygas on this one. People always have made and always will make moral judgements. I don't think that EVERYTHING I disagree with is an ethical problem in need of direct action. I only think of the hacking scandal in this way, so don't exaggerate, I know a straw man when I see one. Moreover, it is uttely ludicrous as well as deeply distasteful, to make a comparison between
(a) tearing in half a copy of the Times to protest against NotW invading the privacy of murder victims and dead soldiers; and
(b) Nazis burning books.”

“"humpfing about the nasty Police"
On the contrary, they treated me well. They were very polite, and they didn't even search me. I just want to know how the policewoman got my number. I don't think it's unreasonable to want to know that, especially in the current somewhat febrile atmosphere.”
Friday, July 08 2011, 8:02PM
“I think I know how she got your number. Nothing a bung to a NotW journo can't fix. And the Times would print extra because their readers would still want a copy. Quantity, not quality. Todays news is tomorrows chip paper.
However, I take my hat off to you; you did it. You forced the hand of Murdoch, closed the News of the Screws, and had 500 people made redundant. I hope you're satisfied now. The world is not enough for some people.”

“The Sun blaming the BBC/guardian for downfall of NOTW is like Rose West blaming the police for Fred West's suicide. If brooks was on, 'holiday' during tappingate, (so murdoch jr told ITN) surely it's incompetence that she didn't know what was going on, she was the editor and if it is then she needs to be sacked. How many of us keep our jobs if we are incompetent?”
Monday, July 11 2011, 11:46AM
“@Nobbygas
What is your problem with my use of the word 'order'? Why am I talking 'borrux'?
@Tony
200 people lost their jobs because the company for which they worked profited from hacking the voicemails of murdered schoolchildren, soldiers killed in action, and their grieving families.
I'm afraid I really don't understand either of you. It is like trying to find something in common with an alien intelligence. Very weird.”

“I have learned that News of the World e-mails uncovered by News International in 2007 contained evidence that the Sunday newspaper was paying a Royal Protection Officer for the contact details of senior members of the royal family, their friends and their relations.
Robert Peston, BBC:-
"According to a source, the e-mails include requests by a reporter for sums of about £1,000 to pay police officers in the royal protection branch for the information. The phone details could have been used to hack phones of the royal family.
"There was clear evidence from the e-mails that the security of the royal family was being put at risk," the source said. "I was profoundly shocked when I saw them."
@MI5
These people are traitors. Please deal with them accordingly.”

“"The Sunday Times is alleged to have targeted the personal information of the former Prime Minister Gordon Brown at the time he was chancellor, a BBC investigation has found.
Documents and a phone recording suggest "blagging" was used to obtain private financial and property details.
The Browns also fear medical records relating to their son Fraser, whom the Sun revealed in 2006 had cystic fibrosis, may have been obtained."
Now it is the turn of a New International broadsheet. When we all have finished vomiting, perhaps we should ask ourselves why we should expect capable and decent politicians to continue to step forward and serve their country if they are going to be subjected to such disgusting and criminal prurience.
It's not as if you have to like Brown. I don't. But I still can't forget the way they shoved the cameras in his face when he came out of the hospital after his baby died.”
Tuesday, July 12 2011, 12:37PM
“Some interesting words there........'alleged'.......'suggest'.....'may....Why do you believe first-hand every claim that is made? Do you not read things properly?
No suggestion that at that time, the Sun newspaper were staunch allies of Labour, that on the day this news was revealed was also the very same day that some bad news was about to be released by the Charity Commission regarding dodgy dealings by Labour.
May I 'suggest', that the news about his child 'may' have been leaked by Labour themselves to provide Brown with sympathetic news coverage.
Why has Brown chosen now to reveal his story?
If the Brown's were so outraged about this story, why did they invite Rebeka Brooks to a slumber party at Chequers one year later?
"why we should expect capable and decent politicians to continue to step forward and serve their country if they are going to be subjected to such disgusting and criminal prurience."
Not many 'capable and decent' politicians around is there? I think you'll find that the actions of Brown, Blair, Mandleson, Campbell etc etc can be described as 'disgusting and criminal prurience'.
Everything surrounding this story stinks of horse****, as politicians, Police and media types are all trying to score cheap political points off of each other.
The real people like the Dowler's, relatives of servicemen etc are being ignored and forgotten about.”

“It's all beginning to unravel.
Apparently, the Guardian broke the news about Brown's baby the day before the Sun.....
"Gordon Brown tonight revealed that his four-month-old son James Fraser has been diagnosed with cystic fibrosis.
A spokesman for the chancellor said he and his wife Sarah were informed their youngest son might have the condition shortly after his birth in July."

“What does that prove? Does it prove that Brooke did not phone Brown at home to tell him that she had discovered that his son had cystic fibrosis and she was going to run the story? No.
Please just stop this ok? Your snide conjectures about the actions of a family with a sick child are nauseating and depressing. You should know better, and I really don't want to stoop to your level by indulging you in your game.”

“Where on earth will I get my b00bies and f00tie fixes if they take away the pulp fiction literature that feeds my nightmares & sets my dreams and aspirations?
Im a ghast for solutions?!
I would seriously feel kicked back if I had to rely upon my historically and collectors wise priceless VIZ magazine stash in order to keep my cocktail party banter classy.
I usually reserve such lofty material for Weddings and the off chance I receive that Knighthood ive been asking for.”

“I don't believe anything unless I can see real proof, and the proof is that the story appeared in the Guardian, with the approval of the Brown family, before it appeared in the Sun.
The proof is that the Brown family invited Brooks, and the Murdoch's to their home for parties etc. Sarah Brown even arranged and hosted a 'slumber party' for Brooks when she got married. Now, if someone upset my family enough to leave me 'in tears' I don't think I'd be inviting them to my home afterwards, would you?
more info for you.....
"If Rebekah Brooks made him cry it seems odd that he subsequently went to her wedding, attended her birthday party and got Sarah to host a "girls" sleep-over at Chequers with Rebekah Brooks and Wendi Murdoch."

“This bendy bus madness. Is there an action group to stop this happening.
Are all the Bristol planners recruited on the basis of having completed the "Cannot see the patently obvious" University degree group?
Take them all to Newcastle, Manchester, Hong Kong, Singapore and so on. Look at a proper tram system. Bendy buses don't work. They put extra vehicles on roads already too busy. They reduce available road volume by taking up "Bus Routes" and if on a shared road are almost impossible to pass due to their length. Can someone show proof of where bendy buses alone made any positive improvements. It is high time the lobby group of the bus companies was barred from entering Bristol City Council.”
“This morning, whilst shopping in the Cheltenham Road Tesco, I noticed that several News International titles were on sale. I am gratified to report that, when I drew this to her attention, the manageress immediately removed the offending items from display. I hope and trust that other newsagents are also removing the Sun and Times from their shelves, and that pubs, bars and the general public are cancelling their Sky subscriptions.”
